When Overtime Isn't Optional
Just off another 12-hour shift that magically turned into 16. I get it, we're short staffed, but when did overtime stop being voluntary? I mean, seriously, I have a life outside this hospital. Or at least I used to. Anyone else feel like they're just expected to work endless hours because they're 'needed'? What about when we need a break?
I hear you. It's like the expectation is we're always on standby, ready to give our all on a moment's notice. I had a similar experience just last week...
While I get your point, we did sign up for this. We knew the job was going to be demanding and unpredictable. That's part of the deal.
Let's be real, 'shift hours' in nursing are a myth. You clock out when the job is done, not when the clock hits 12 hours. Exhausting but true.
